Atlanta Final Call

A bit dazed, jet lagged and feelin’ funny as usual
The flight home was OK – slept from 2 seconds after take off, but was rollin’ and turing on my way to small seats… for the complete flight.
The PFOLA conference was as usual superb, and again we took some time to check out the City.
A Braves game, a walk through the Georgia Aquarium, and a few beers.

Tnx to my main man PJ and MzMitchel for the lovely time ‘n talks.  Amazing what a difference a local can make…
And that Adam Levine stuff looks like a compliment to me ;-)

Steaks, beer and rock n roll

A smooth 10 hour flight zipped us to  Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International airport.
It took us double the time, I need to get from my home to Ghent, to get from the plane to the exit of the airport.  No less then 5 security checkpoints, 5 stops on the airport train, and some searching for our luggage later we managed to get a cab to downtown Atlanta.
A quick check-in, and 20 min. later we hooked up with André, the hotel concierge who pointed us to a great steak house and the local Hooters pub.  All of a sudden, the upcomming sleepdeficit was gone…

Pictures to follow ;-)

Art’n podiatry

a small addendum to my previous posting

some fantastic work by Sam
Sam Dillemans

1O minutes of philosophy by Sam

Sam Dillemans was born in Louvain, Belgium, 1965 and works as a painter (and in my humble opinion – as a philosopher) in borgerhout, Antwerp.
This 10 minute video is a small part of a documentary based on the Monography that was published in 2007.
I would want my students (soon to be colleagues) to listen to this fragment and to reflect…  Cause from time to time, I get the feelin’ that a lesson in ”how to be humble” is worth more then how do I jump in the fast lane to wealth.
Sit back, pay attention … and listen!
A quote:

ik leef altijd met een zeer gezonde frustratie dat ik er nooit zal geraken, en dat maakt dat ik ook altijd zal blijven werken dag in dag uit

Tnx Mr. VC for bringin’ this to my attention – I very much appreciate our 20′ talks!

New LER: Lower Extremity Review

LER is brought to you by the same team that brought you BioMechanics magazine. When CMP Medica abruptly shut down BioMechanics in February, a void was immediately created.  Our research showed that there was a need for a multi-disciplinary publication focused and targeted on the lower extremity. Healthcare reform and the continuum of care has opened the door for the delivery of accurate, practical and relevant information for the various specialists involved in treating the lower extremity. Podiatrists, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, orthotists, prosthetists, and pedorthics are all connected in this process, and LER will be bridging the information gap between the various specialists as well as between practitioners and manufacturers of products used to treat lower extremity injuries.

Ice Age III is coming out soon

Since my son Mattias is in the Dinosaur stage,  The next Ice Age Movie is going to be a bulls’eye!
Already looking out to our Dinosaur Live show.

I passed my second pair of MSc Modules!

JIIIIHAAAAAAAAA!
I couldn’t get better news today then from my favourite MSc programme leader Gloria.

Just to let you know that you have passed your current developments and tissue viability modules. You should be able to access the results on the QMU website. I will be in touch to discuss your next stage.

Well done!

Gloria

Now I have to start to figure out what i’m going to do next…  90 down, 30 more credits to go plus the project hurdle!  But before all that…he rested…and thus so will I!

Gonna try to get back on track

I’ve been neglecting my blog, but now that everything is cooling down a bit and the summer is knockin’ on the door I’m gettin’ back in the groove with the new Song of Bob and my main group aka The Sugar Hill Gang!

Again, for all the students out there: Hit the books and get in the groove with the LALA song

The use of Finite Element Foot Modeling

One of the second year modules in my MSc affaire, is Current Developments in Podiatry.  For this one I let myself completely go on the Finite Element Modeling and Analysis department…
Finite Element Foot Modeling or analysis is based on a numerical technique to compute or simulate a foot model subjected to a variety of (static/dynamic) loads.  The major problem in the use of this technique, lies in gathering appropriate knowledge of the real life structure and creating a reliable model trying not to introduce to many errors on one hand and capturing the geometrical complexity of the foot structure in order to precisely simulate the biomechanical behaviour of the human foot (CT scan / MRI) on the other.  The Center of Excellence for Limb Loss Prevention and Prosthetic Engineering has developed a first validated finite element model of a foot  consisting of 26 foot bones, a part of the tibia/fibula, 51 ligaments and cartilage and plantar soft tissue.
